yoga, matcha + interior style

It was a beautiful weekend in Charlotte, and even more beautiful for me since my twin sister came into town for a visit. It was short, but sweet. It's always special to get sister connection time. We are both photo stylists + interior designers so our loves + passions are very much in sync.

We had some fun exploring the city; checking out a few of my fav places that always inspire; and indulging in matcha lattes at Luna's Living Kitchen.

I'm so in love with the vibe at Luna's ... it's the perfect mix of boho + mid-century, industrial + modern ... Such a fresh interior!

I also love their catch-phrase, "We believe that health, beauty + art can be served on a plate."

Beautiful, healthy, artful food... Plus, very hip interior design. Who could ask for more?

We also soaked in some visual inspiration at Anthropologie in South End (right next to Luna's) which is always a feast for a stylist's senses.

...and finally, we took on hot yoga at Yoga One.

In the midst of chaturangas, I learned a few lessons that have me reflecting on life + career pursuits... lessons that I think are really relevant to blogging + design ... so I just had to share a few thoughts.

"Where the eye goes, the energy flows" ...the words of our yogi are still resonating in my mind. What we focus on is where our energy will take us. Our intention will drive us, move us, lead us. In yoga, the act of setting an intention is a dedication. It's a way to take your yoga practice beyond your mat and into your lifestyle. Having a focus is key in yoga + life. Lately I've realized how important it is to have focus + intent in the areas I want to grow, whether personally or professionally.

Focus is also an important element in design. Focus, having a focal point, is what draws your eye to what's important, in an art composition or in a room interior. Consider your current design project and ask yourself, "Where's my focus?" Sometimes we have to edit, take away in order to bring the the focal point into focus. There are so many parallels. What do you need to edit in your interior? in your life?

Perhaps what's most evident in yoga + in life, is when we are out of balance. The practice of grounding your feet in position, having a specific stature + rhythm allow you to find your balance on the mat. In life, it can be more complicated... learning to balance self care, parenthood, career, relationships. It requires grounding too, and sometimes starting over. It requires flexibility and forgiveness, of self and others. In design + interior spaces, balance too brings peace + room-to-breathe. {See my last post on balancing an interior here.}

What are you balancing lately? What ways do you need to ground yourself? I don't know about you, but I feel like I'm on a constant quest for balance. I crave it. If you have any secrets, share your thoughts in the comments. I'd love to hear your perspective. I wrote a post awhile back about the Artist's Way ... about pursuing the elements you want your life to look like. {Check-out that post here.} I'm always + forever seeking new strategies for obtaining better balance.

M O M E N T U M

In yoga the movements between poses, or vinyases, keep the flow of movement going. The poses, motions and transitions build flexibility, strength and momentum. For some reason, my favorite move this weekend was rising up on my toes in downward dog and then jumping to the front of the mat. It dawned on me that the movement of my toes rising allowed me the momentum to jump rather than walk. Similarly, in life lately, I've seen how one move, even a small one, can build momentum toward more and more progress.

I have been wanting to build this blog for a long time, but lately with a little focus, I have made some moves to begin to make it happen. Slowly, but surely I'm moving. I'm officially an affiliate with Etsy and Amazon. Two of my go-to sources for props, home and interior accents, fashion, DIY items, etc. {If you want to become an Etsy affilate too, click here.} That move propelled me to do more research at driving more traffic to my blog. I'm learning about SEO, rss feeds, pinging posts ... Oh the rabbit hole of possibilities.  I'm such a novice still ... I am wide open people. Share your insights. Here's to momentum taking us exciting places!

secrets from a stylist: MIX IT UP!

Hi all!

Today, I'm handing it off to a special guest blogger...my twin sister Pam Stasney.  She too is a photo stylist {+ set decorator}.  She has designed sets for film, television + more...in NYC + LA...and has currently landed in Milwaukee. She was recently featured in the December issue of M Magazine: Milwaukee's Lifestyle Magazine {click here to read the full article.}

Take a peek at some of her interior spaces + listen to her insights into interior styling + design.  Here she is...

Sources: Sofa from Architexture Home (Studio City, CA),Baker Chair designed by Barbara Barry and found on Craigslist, Sunburst Mirror from Plantation Home Los Angeles, Throw pillows from OneKingsLane, allmodern, etsy and Target. Area rug designed by Dwell and available at McNabb & Risley.  Turquoise Lamps from Target, White Ceramic Pagoda from Design Xchange, Pewaukee, WI.}

With years of experience decorating sets for film and styling photographs in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and now Milwaukee, I have learned a few trade secrets that I'd love to share with BeSoStyle readers.

First and foremost. It's all about mixing it up!

Mix High + Low

Ok, I admit, I have expensive taste, far beyond my budget.  I've learned that if you splurge on one or two statement pieces, you can supplement with bargain finds, without sacrificing style.

In my office, I have a high-end, antique desk from a movie set I decorated (one of the perks of working in the film industry).

...but, my desk chair is a bargain find from Marshalls, designed by Cynthia Rowley.  Ikat pillow from OneKingsLane (an amazing resource).  And the stunning brass étagère is a second-hand find from Designer Consigner in Hartland, WI.

Another great way to MIX IT UP...

Mix Old + New

When I’m creating a lifestyle set, whether for photography or film, my goal is to create a space that feels collected over time.  Mixing vintage pieces with more modern elements makes the movie magic happen.  In my office, I created a gallery wall over my desk, a chic way to display a collection of art.  In the gallery, I have some cherished heirloom pieces:  an abstract painting from my Dad (Dancing Rainbow) and a small watercolor painted by my mother-in-law.  Alongside these heirloom pieces, is a mixture of contemporary art creations: a fine art print from my husband (Butterfly Peonia by Jeff Stasney), a graphic Golden Retriever Silhouette from Mod Dog/etsy.com, Fruit of the Spirit Print from Olive Manna, Spin Art from a friend (I just love kid’s art) and a DIY project I created on a whim.

Mixing old with new works when styling your bookshelves too.  Intermingle interesting objects alongside your books to keep it visually intriguing.

Mix Neutrals + Patterns

A neutral base is timeless and opens the way for color flexibility.  For my interior design clients, I usually recommend neutral colors and great textured fabric for the cornerstone pieces of a room. My sofa is a deep neutral grey.  Because I’m a California girl (at heart), my color accents are primarily the colors of sun and surf.  It’s what makes me happy.  With a neutral base, you are free to change up your throw pillows with colors and patterns to suit your mood-of-the-moment.  Simply changing the accessories can create a whole new feeling in your space, without having to spend a lot.

Before you begin your design project…

Create a Mood Board for Inspiration.

Here's mine for my office space...

Creating a mood board is definitely something I’ve learned from my work in film and photo styling.  Whenever I am creating a space or story, I first gather inspirations: fabric & wallpaper swatches, paint chips, objects of nature, interior or fashion photos that have a certain vibe, a piece of art, an architectural element etc…As you gather, see how it flows.  You will be able to edit and refine as you narrow down the feeling you want to create.

When it comes to your personal space, surround yourself with colors and things that make you happy.

sister style

...or should I say sisters who style?  My twin sister Pam (also a stylist) was in Asheville, NC this month.  Yay me! So happy to see my sister, even if we mixed a little work with fun.

{Pam & me. Photograph by Jim Wieland}

Asheville is beautiful this time of year and we were surrounded by fall colour & sunshine.  Though Pam has spent the majority of her career as a set decorator for films & commercials in New York and Los Angeles... she now resides in Milwaukee. Pam was in Asheville styling a photo shoot for Country Woman Magazine (city girl does country).

The magazine is doing a feature on blogger and author Ashley English.  Check-out Ashley's blog, small measure.  She's all about sustainable living ... and truly is the real-deal.  She is an incredible resource on a myriad of topics, including gardening, baking, bee-keeping...the list goes on. She also writes a "small measure" column for design sponge (check-out her recent post about making homemade chai tea).

While we were in beautiful Asheville, I found out that Asheville is often referred to as "the Paris of the South."  Who knew?  It's a little taste of art, culture, romance... hence a little hint of Paris.  So to be true to the European notion, we decided to dine at Bouchon ... a sweet French bistro with delicious steak frites & a great wine list, plus a farm-to-table philosophy.

Best of all, I was able to re-connect with my sister.  You may view Pam's beautiful work at pamstasneystyle.  She's an amazing stylist & designer.

Here's to more opportunities to work and play together again soon.

Enjoy your weekend all!!!
